Equipment Types Back

While there are various types of trailers available for shipping freight, trailer specifications and configurations must conform to industry standards.

The vans we use typically measure approximately 53' in length:

Or 48' in length:

Depending on the shipment, the type of trailer used will fall under one of the following categories:

Flatbed

A flatbed is a level load floor with removable side rails, no roof and a bulkhead at the front to protect the tractor in the event of a load shift. A flatbed allows for quick and efficient loading of goods that may require more space than is available in a closed-body trailer, and goods that are not vulnerable to precipitation. Typically a flatbed can haul any load that can be stacked and strapped down.

Extendible (Stretch) Flatbed

An extendible flatbed, also known as a "stretch" flatbed, is a flatbed trailer with an extendible section in the middle to extend the load floor up to 75 feet.

Step Deck (Drop Deck)

A step deck, also referred to as a "drop deck", has a floor that drops down below the fifth wheel of the trailer when clear of the tractor unit. The most common type of step deck trailers are flatbeds and curtain siders.

40,000- 46,000 lbs.

35' - 37'

Width:
8'6"

Extendible Step Deck

An extendible step deck is a step deck (or drop deck) trailer with an extendible section in the middle to extend the load floor up to 60 feet.

24' - 30'

0' - 11'8"

Double Extendible Drop Deck

A double extendible drop deck is a trailer with an extendible mid-section that allows the dropped section of the load floor to extend up to 50 feet.

A lowboy is a low-bed trailer with two separate drops in deck height - one directly behind the removable gooseneck (RGN), the second directly before the trailer wheels. This type of deck is designed as an open flatbed with the deck extremely close to the ground. A lowboy is more commonly employed for hauling industrial equipment and bulky or tall loads.
